We welcome donations! We are currently fundraising for the restoration of the Old Town Hall.
The building was remodeled around 60 years ago when they set out to address some cosmetic and structural issues with the building. They decided to build a raised floor system, install a wood framed suspended ceiling and apply wall paneling. It covered things up but has now become outdated and not fitting in with the atmosphere of an 1833 structure. The current plan is to peel back the ceiling, walls and floors to reveal the original bones and create a room of the past.
Forge and Quill are the contractors chosen to do the work. Its leaders are Darren Elder and Ben Murphy, who specialize in restoration and upgrades of historical buildings. They are currently working on the Norway Opera House. Darren has deep roots in Windham. His father, Bruce has been an excavation contractor in the town for many years and is a lifelong member of the society. Ben is from New Gloucester and comes with a wealth of remodeling and restoration experience.
The original scope involved replacing the entire floor framing system of one half of the building to bring it to its original level. This was to address mold in the crawl space. Upon deeper investigation, it was determined that the original structure was in very good condition and that mold remediation and crawl space conditioning became the new scope. There will be jacking and leveling involved in the beams and stone supports but these require mostly labor vs replacing the entire floor structure. A huge cost savings.
